Going out West - and beyond...
This theme deals with important themes in American literature such as the cowboy and the outlaw, the road and the car, the individual and the state and guns and gun control.
This theme takes Frederick Jackson Turner's frontier thesis as its starting point. Turner argues that American culture is characterised strongly by its origins in the wilderness regions between civilisation and savagery - the prairies and the West.
Another philosophical starting point is Henry David Thoreau and his thoughts about life in the woods and civil disobedience.
