Roleplay: The State of California vs. George Milton

Having finished the book and the film, we are going to play a roleplaying game.

We will spend most of two classes on this. One for preparation and one for performance.

Background: George Milton is being charged with the murder of Lennie Small. We are going to play out the trial.

Class 1: preparation

During this class, you must find out what your role in this trial is going to be - and what your formal role is in an actual trial. You should prepare what you are going to say and do.

1. Assigning roles

2. Everybody should read the Trial Manuscript to make sure you know how a trial proceeds. Judge, Bailiff, Jurors and Attorneys should pay close attention.

3. Preparation in groups and individually:

Judge, Bailiff, Jurors: find out what your roles consist of in a trial - and find the phrases you will need. You must look extra closely at the Trial Manuscript. Learn your roles, their functions and their lines by heart. Read the ending in italics very closely. Find out what can legally happen to George Milton. What can he be condemned of? What is the punishment? What if he is aquitted? You may find inspiration here.

Prosecution and prosecution witnesses: agree on who will say what and what the witnesses will be used for. Prepare your statements and prepare opening statements (and closing statements). Remember that you are aiming to have George condemned of Murder (in the 1st degree). Read about this. You may invent and introduce evidence (within reason).

Defense Attorney and defense witnesses: agree on who will say what and what the witnesses will be used for. Prepare your statements and prepare opening statements (and closing statements). Find out if you wish to pursue an aquittal or a less serious offense than Murder in the 1st degree. Read about degrees of murder. (Wiki) You may invent and introduce evidence (within reason).

Journalists: Try to find interviews with some of the people involved and write articles covering the buildup to the trial. Select an angle for each article and find good headlines. After the trial, you should each write an article covering the outcome of the trial.

Class 2: The Trial

The trial proceeds according to this manuscript.

During the trial, Jurors as well as Journalists are required to make notes.

After the trial, Journalists are required to cover the outcome of the trial in an article.

Additional phrases you may need:

For the lawyers: "Objection (argumentative or irrelevant)"
For The Judge: "Sustained" - "Overruled" (And when we need a break:) "The court is now in recess. We will have a ten minute break." - (After the break:) "The court is now in session." - " Counselors approach the bench." - "Order in the courtroom." - " I will hold you in contempt, and have you removed."
